Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

October 14, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

I have had a lovely weekend. Taking a break from 'moming' duties was great, but I'm happy to have Obie back home now, and he is glad to be home, where it's a lot quieter!

His father got him a new small trampoline for his birthday. His old one died a while back, and he hasn't had a way to really work off the nervous energy he gets. This will help him burn it off, and prevent me from going nuts because he's keyed up.

This last week was pretty good for saving money. I got the movie RAMPAGE at the library so we enjoyed that.

Thanks to Little Pen Pen's ( advice, I got out my cast iron pan and started using it on my electric stove top. It works great, and no problems. Thank you Penny! I won't need to buy those stupid non stick pans anymore.

We had some leftover beef steak from Sunday night, so I cut it up and warmed it up (in my cast iron skillet!), then took leftover salad greens, some black beans, corn, a can of southwestern tomatoes, and a bit of chopped up onion and bell pepper, and made a Southwestern Salad for Obie and me the next night. I drizzled a little Catalina dressing over the top--scrummy!

I'm a big fan of Rhonda Barfield, author of the Eat Well For $50.00 A Week book. I have had my copy for almost 30 years now, and I still use it. I found this book of hers on Amazon for $4.99, with no tax and free shipping. I just happened to have a $5.00 gift card for Amazon, so I ordered it. It's good, had a lot of the information from the first book, but updated and added to. I can recommend it.

Back when I was helping momma in law find a white trash bridesmaid dress (don't ask--long story), we went to a shop that had this painting for $10.00. I fell in love immediately, but I couldn't justify buying it at that time, so I walked away. Well, I kept thinking about that picture for months. I mean, look at it, it's gorgeous, it has the colors I want in my kitchen and dining room, it's Southwestern in design, and it has chili peppers--I LOVE chili peppers.

Last week I made a little extra cash, and I went to see if they still had it, and they did! I was about $3.00 short of the total, so I was going to ask her if she would hold on to it until next week. The Redneck was with me, and he paid the $3.00. He's not just cute, he's kind and generous. And he doesn't even like the picture! He knew that I did, so he helped me get it. Maybe I didn't save a lot of money, but that was priceless to me.

And I have great news--I am getting a washing machine! A friend from church knew that my old one had died over a month ago. She had to go settle her late aunt's estate, and she called me to say that she is bringing her aunt's like new machine home with her, and she will call me when I can come pick it up! I am so excited to be able to do laundry at home again, and to use my clothesline (maybe, it's still a wet rainy mess here right now) again. And it will save the $15.00 each week that I have had to spend to wash clothes at the local laundromat. Don't get me wrong, it's great to have a good laundromat so near, and the folks who own it are very nice, but it takes a huge chunk of time from my day when I go there, and it cuts into my available cash.

Before the trail ride was canceled, I had soaked and cooked up 3 pounds of pinto beans for the lunch that would be served after the ride. Yeah, that's a lot of beans. Fortunately, I will be making freezer burritos, refried beans, and beef and bean enchiladas with them. I will have several meals in the freezer for days when I just don't want to cook.

While the trail ride was canceled, they still had the drawing for the different raffles they sold tickets for, and they will have the auction at the community center in town this coming weekend, along with a big BBQ lunch. Guess what I'm making for the lunch? PINTO BEANS!

Well, I got chores. Later y'all.
