Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

August 5, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

This last week was pretty good for the most part. Saturday afternoon, however, was an emotional roller coaster. My little dog Poblano went missing. She was out on her potty tether, and when I went to get her, she was gone.

We both called her name for a long time, and I drove up and down the road calling for her and asking the neighbors if they had seen her. I got back to the house and started crying because I was so upset. I decided to put a prayer request on our church's Pony Express Prayer (PEP) line.

I wrote out the request that Poblano come home safe. I hit 'send', and at that exact moment I heard the Redneck yell, "POBLANO! GET OVER HERE!" My little 'monster' was home! Needless to say, she got a bath and her collar washed (you haven't lived until you've watched a 'naked' Poblano run through the house).

Let's see what adventures happened last week.

I harvested a lot of cat brier to add to salads. You can find this thorny vine on fences down country roads. You can pop off the tender ends and eat them. The root is big and round, and can be cut up to eat as a survival food.

My cuttings from several different plants have developed roots, so I have been planting them in potting soil to make new plants. Can you tell what the pothos ivy above in planted in? It's an old Scentsy wax warmer! The bulb socket came loose, so it came to me. I simply cut the wires and removed the socket, put weed cloth in the bottom to hold in the soil, then planted the vine. I used an old saucer to catch the water. I would have used the little tray that holds the wax cubes instead, but the Redneck stole it to hold coins on his dresser!

I needed other containers to plant in, but until I can find some clay pots (or other old Scentys), I have been asking my favorite question, 'What has God put in my hand?' The result was I am using deli containers, yogurt and cottage cheese tubs, large tin cans, and a big Styrofoam cup that BB sauce came in. I'll move the different plants to new pots when I find them.

I made $27.00 on consignment sales this month. While I was there, I looked at the DVDs for sale. I came across a set of 3 discs. It was the FULL MOON VIDEO series PUPPET MASTER and KILLJOY! I ended up with a total of 15 movies from one of my favorite studios for only $2.00. YIPPEE!

I downloaded a free e cookbook, Leanne Brown's Good & Cheap. She actually wrote the book for folks who are on food stamps. You won't just find cheap recipes for survival in this book--she has recipes that are cheap AND nutritious. You can download it here: https://cookbooks.leannebrown.com/good-and-cheap.pdf

I DIDN'T buy junk food when I had the chance! That was a savings of not only money, but calories and health!

With the cooler weather we've been able to turn off the AC and open windows. We also have been sitting out on the porch late at night and just enjoying talking. I hate to drive past homes with gorgeous front porches that no one uses.

I got out my coupon binder and started filling it again with the free coupons I get through the mail or from the library. I used it Tuesday, and with my senior discount for the day, I knocked a grocery bill down from $25.68 to $14.05!

I went through the free PREVENTION magazines I got from the library and found a recipe for crackers made from leftover juicing pulp. I don't always have pulp after juicing--the horses love the carrot and green veggie pulp. I'm going to hold some back to try the crackers though (just please don't tell my mare Fancy Pants!)

We ate leftovers for several meals.

I found this slow cooker cookbook at the library--great recipes. I never realized how many meals you can make in a slow cooker. You can even make kid's play dough! I  may be buying a used copy of this on Amazon when I have the points.

My big thrill Friday was getting a package from my blogging/vlogging buddy Kate Singh, at Coffee With Kate. She sent me a Coffee With Kate tee shirt, and a copy of her book The Homemade Housewife. You need to check her books out on Amazon, and her YouTube channel Coffee With Kate.

At church this morning I had several people bring me bags of clothes they were purging. I like this western styled purse. I also got a bag of necklaces from another friend. I sorted through them later and found a couple I can wear with different outfits. The rest will be distributed to other people. There were some nice jeans in the bags, but when I tried them on, I found they were TOO BIG! I'm smaller than a size 14 now! (Fist pump)

I found these shiny silver high heels for $4.00 at a thrift store. Yes, I can walk in those three inch heels quite well. They are for the upcoming holiday season, when I actually dress up fancy schmancy.

That's it for money saving adventure this week. I also want y'all to know that I am now recording videos for my YouTube channel, Blessed In Bowie. I'm considering doing a 100 videos in 100 days to get myself motivated. I did that on my old channel years ago. It was fun and helped me to discipline myself, but boy, was it insane. Please check me out.

Well, I got chores. Later y'all.
