Video--5 Budget Busters And How I handle Them

Image
August 31, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

I love to watch collab videos on YouTube. I get the best inspiration and ideas from all kinds of people. Recently I watched a series of collabs that was started by Frugal Green Girl. They were titled 5 Budget Busters And How I Handle Them. I was impressed with the different ways that these vloggers handled all the little things that can sink a family's financial boat. I decided to make my own list, albeit it was hard to just have 5. There's a lot of spending land mines out there, and we have to know how to maneuver around them.

So here's my list.

I always looks so....crazed when I'm trying to get a point across!

Our Thursday Stroll Around Town--Thrift Angels Thrift Store

August 30, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Today was pretty good. We accomplished a few chores around the house, hand lunch, then the Redneck dropped us at the library on his way to work. I did some work online until the Internet went down. By then Obie was ready for our weekly stroll, so we grabbed the camera and my clipboard full of stuff for the St. Jude's Trail Ride, and we took off.

If you recall last week's stroll, you will remember the artist Roger Whitaker. He was painting a mural outside of the Scoop Shack, a local ice cream shop. He told me he would be doing another mural at the other end of the building, so I headed over to see what had been done. I found that the paint was being removed down the brick wall to prepare the surface for the new mural. I thought it was splendid that the original paint had been uncovered. You can see that this building used to be a REXAL Pharmacy. I love to find these little bit of a town's history.

Next we stopped in at Thrift Ang…

Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

Image
August 26, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

I think last week was pretty good, even with my washing machine kicking the bucket and dumping two inches of water all over the laundry room floor. Oh yeah, it was a mess. Fortunately, the floor is concrete, so it wasn't anywhere near the disaster it could have been. I got the water off the floor, and the sopping wet laundry was taken to the local laundromat and rewashed. I brought it home and used the dryer because I was just too darned tired to hang anything out after all that. One of my money saving adventures this week was when I mentioned on our church's email prayer line about what had happened. I was only asking for prayer to help me get the mess cleaned up and handle getting a new washer eventually. It appears God had other plans, however.

A bit later I was informed that a family in our church had a machine in storage they didn't need, so they gave it to us! Yes, it's used, but it WORKS. My old machine was also a fre…

IT WORKED! IT WORKED!!!!!

August 25, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Now, I know you're wondering what I am so excited about in the title of this post. You may have guessed a little from the photo that shows in the preview. Let me start at the beginning....

Several weeks ago, I came across an article on how to plant avocado seeds in soil, instead of doing the whole toothpick in water routine, which hasn't worked for me in years (especially not since I have cats--Stripe thinks it's great fun to grab the 'leggy' round thing out of the water and play with it all over the house). Yet I have always wanted a little avocado tree, and now that I have room for plants, I hoped to finally grow one.

This article "Easiest Way To Plant And Grow An Avocado Seed In Soil", is by Rebecca Scudder. You can read it at this link: https://dengarden.com/gardening/An-Almost-Foolproof-Way-to-Grow-an-Avocado-from-a-Seed I like how she gives clear instructions--even *I* understood her!

Our Thursday Stroll Around Town--The Fire House And An Awesome Local Artist

Image
August 23, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Today when the Redneck went to work, he dropped us off at the library so I could try uploading a video to my YouTube channel. Doing it here at home is taking a lot more time than it should, Fortunately it went much faster on the library computers. I'll probably shoot the videos at home then upload at the library.

After I was done with that, I decided to take my new camera for a 'test drive' around town. Obie was ready to go for a walk, so off we went.

First we stopped at the fire house.

I like this set of painted cinder blocks out front.

Obie likes the big trucks. When we was about 10, he rode in one for a small town parade. He was fine with it--until the guy driving hit the siren! He sort of jumped a 'bit'.

We always stop at this monument to pray for the firemen, police officers, EMTs, other emergency workers in our town and the rest of Montague County.

We started to walk down Thrift Angels, and that's when we met a…

ACK! STICKER ATTACK!!!!

Image
August 21, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

If you look in the circled areas in the above photo, you will see my greatest nemesis in yard maintenance--STICKERS. These are potentially painful puncturing pop ups (say that 5 times fast), capable of making an otherwise lush area of grass a mine field of ouch inducers on bare feet.

We have kept them at bay for most of the summer, mowing regularly to prevent them reaching this stage. However, the much needed rain we have been receiving lately has kept us from being able to mow for a couple of weeks. These little buggers took advantage, and now there are quite a few spread across areas of the property.

Unfortunately, we can't just mow them down, because that will spread the seeds everywhere, creating more of them. I refuse to use chemicals when I can avoid it--I like fireflies and other pretty critters. So that leaves me with only one option...

I have to pull them up. <<GROAN>>

Yep, I have to spend the next few days on my kn…

Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

Image
August 19, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Actually, today's post is money saving adventures for the last two weeks, since I was too pooped from working Bowie Trade Days all last weekend to do a post.

As you know from my last post, I got a new (to me--gotta love pawn shops) camera. It is so stinkin' COOL. I love it, and it takes great photos. Of course, I had to learn a few things I hadn't had to deal with in my old camera...

Like the fact that there's a REALLY bright light that flashes just before the picture is taken. The Redneck isn't nearly as cute when he's just been blinded.

Okay, now let's get caught up, shall we?

I was tired of having all my new plants I've been starting on a bunch of little saucers or lids on the surface they're on, so I looked around to see if I had something that would work better.

Several years ago a friend gave me this steel sheet pan that had been used in her father's bakery when she was a child. It is too big fo…

God Done Did It Again!

August 17, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Some of you may recall when I told how my Kodak camera fell and jammed. http://blessedinbowie.blogspot.com/2018/06/on-other-hand.html

It left me with few options to post photos on here. Basically I had to use the Redneck's phone and that was hard, since he's not always around when I need to shoot a picture.

In the post I mentioned a pawn shop in another town having a Canon camera with all the trimmings for sale for $400.00. I had to accept that it wasn't gonna happen, and I pretty much came to grips with the situation, even finding a small digital camera for I think $5.00 not long after. It worked okay, and I was back in business.

As you know, our cowboy church has been working to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, selling raffle tickets and collecting donations of merchandise to auction off during the yearly trail ride. I just happen to be really good at getting stuff donated, so that's what I go around…

Been Out Of Pocket--Music Memories

Image
August 15, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me, and no, I didn't fall off the edge of the earth!

I honestly didn't realize that I hadn't posted since last week. I was busy getting ready for the 125th Anniversary of Bowie Trade Days, where my church set up a booth to sell raffle tickets to raise money for St Jude's Children's Hospital. The Redneck was off on Friday and Monday, so I was busy with my Beloved. Then I had to get back on schedule after having him home all weekend. Not to mention how pooped I was from walking all over the fairgrounds to ask vendors to donate something for the auction we have after the trail ride we do each year for St Jude's. I definitely got exercise for Saturday and Sunday!

I'll be catching up my money saving adventures next week, combining the two weeks.

Okay, what else do I need to let y'all know?

I'm kind of bummed out, because this week I learned that one of the founding members of the band Confederate Railroad passed a…

Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

Image
August 5, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

This last week was pretty good for the most part. Saturday afternoon, however, was an emotional roller coaster. My little dog Poblano went missing. She was out on her potty tether, and when I went to get her, she was gone.

We both called her name for a long time, and I drove up and down the road calling for her and asking the neighbors if they had seen her. I got back to the house and started crying because I was so upset. I decided to put a prayer request on our church's Pony Express Prayer (PEP) line.

I wrote out the request that Poblano come home safe. I hit 'send', and at that exact moment I heard the Redneck yell, "POBLANO! GET OVER HERE!" My little 'monster' was home! Needless to say, she got a bath and her collar washed (you haven't lived until you've watched a 'naked' Poblano run through the house).

Let's see what adventures happened last week.

How I Got My Marriage Band--And Why I Don't Wear It Every Day

Image
August 2, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

Recently in a conversation with a friend of mine, he said something about my 'husband, or maybe he's your boyfriend?'. I said that yes, the Redneck is my husband. He said that because I don't wear a wedding ring, he thought maybe we weren't married.

Well, first of all, we don't call them wedding rings. We call them marriage bands. While weddings are pretty events with good food, they are only a symbol that a marriage is beginning. I see young girls spend years dreaming of their wedding day, all starry eyed over the romance, yet they never seem to give a single thought to the marriage after. All their focus is on one day in a lifetime (hopefully, but these days it's iffy) with another human being.

I explained to my friend that the reason neither of us wear our bands every day is due to the life we lead. We are always working on projects that involve dirt, grease, power tools, horses and their equipment, and so on. …
