Money Saving Adventures For Last Week

May 12, 2018

Hey y'all, it's me!

I am doing my weekly savings post tonight, cause I don't wanna work on Mother's Day. Let's jump right in.

On Tuesday I used some coupons that Brookshires Grocery Store had sent me. I only bought two items that didn't have a coupon to go with them (mushroom soup and tater tots. What can I say? I was craving John Wayne casserole that day.). The two gallons of milk were in the clearance section of the dairy aisle at $1.00 each. They also had coupons attached that gave me 55 cents off each one, so I got two gallons of milk for the freezer for less than a dollar. Between the coupons, the clearance items, the thank you store card and the Tuesday 5% senior discount, I saved $9.70--54% of the total bill!

I got free coupons in the mail from Retail Me Not. I don't know yet if I will use them or pass them on to a lady I know who coupons.

A quick check of a clearance aisle revealed a big tube of Crest toothpaste of only $1.50.

I was craving chocolate cake, so I baked one from a mix I had on hand, using coconut oil instead of regular oil. It was so moist I almost didn't need to make a frosting. But I wanted more chocolate, so I made up a frosting based on a recipe from a Kate Singh book, using coconut oil, water and milk chocolate chips instead of the dark chocolate her recipe calls for. Oh. My. I poured it over the cake, and almost swooned from the goodness. I didn't want to eat the whole thing in one sitting, so I cut it into squares and flash froze them on a cookie sheet. I put the squares into baggies, then the baggie into a larger zip lock bag in the freezer. If I get another yen for cake, I just take out a square and allow it to thaw. No waste!

I stopped at Thrift Angels Thrift Store on Thursday while visiting the library, and I found three new tops for $4.00. It was a buy one, get two free sale again.

I checked the box of donations for the library book sale, and found The Detox Box for $1.00. It has cards, CDs, and workbooks to help guide you through the process of detoxing your life in different areas.

Friday morning, after Obie and I worked in the yard for a while, I decided to go to a garage sale down the road. I found a bread machine for $5.00, and a storage container for 50 cents. I had a bread machine already, but the mixing paddle disappeared several months ago (I suspect the cats stole it when it was drying on the counter--it's in this house SOMEWHERE!). I usually make bread by hand, but it's nice to have a machine for the days when I am swamped. I really like this one, because it actually makes a loaf shape, instead of the big block. If I ever find the other paddle, I will either sell it or give it to someone who can use it.

Downloaded a free e book novel from Book Bub.

The most exciting thing this week? Today I got NEW COUCHES! My friend from church was moving, and she didn't need the couch and love seat she had in her old living room. I LOVE them, they are well built (they have 'good bones' as my buddy Kate Singh says), and comfortable? Oh honey, they are wonderful. I like the colors, they go with what I am doing in my living room.

Look at the detail on one of the arms. There's also nice detailing around the bottom, and big chunky feet hold them up.

Obie likes the love seat with the big squishy cushions. I mean...

He REALLY likes it! I took this photo this afternoon, and he was zonked out.

I hope you all have a blessed Mother's Day.

Well, I got chores. Later y'all.

    1. I like that couch too--he and I mowed for two hours yesterday afternoon, then came in and showered, and we both just collapsed on the two couches until time to feed the horses. They are so comfy. I still have frozen cake pieces, It's nice to have them put away so I don't feel I have to eat the whole thing in a day or two.

  2. I'm enjoying reading your blog!

Oh, I LOVE your couches, especially the wood details!

Good for you for all your bargains! I'm good at scouting for them, but I don't record them or have a system for remembering my thrifty triumphs. :)

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! I love this couch and love seat--it just 'goes' with what I'm trying to do in my living room. I do seem to have a knack for bargains, in fact it would take less time to go through my house and point out the things that I paid retail for! Recording is easy--I have a little planner, and each week has a section where I jot down everything I do, so I don't forget them when I am ready to write my post.
